The World Press Photo exhibition has already become a traditional event in the WestLicht programme. The best press photographs of the preceding year are on show – around 200 winning works from the World Press Photo Contest, the biggest annual photo-journalist competition in the world. Conceived of as a travelling show, it will take place in WestLicht for the 4th time in succession. The WPP05 is the 48th in the competition’s history and will be visited by around two million people in 40 countries.
The overall winner for 2004 is the Indian photographer Arko Datta (Reuters) with his shot of a woman in Cuddalore, Tamil Nadu (India) mourning for a family member who died in the December 2004 tsunami.
For the first time in decades there are also two Austrians among the prize winners: Alfred Seiland was awarded a prize for his photograph “Hanging Garden” (for the New York Times) in the category “Art and Culture”. It shows clothes by Marc Jacobs, Alexander McQueen und Max Mara in a floral presentation. Peter Granser received an honourable mention for his photo series of Alzheimer patients (Laif Photos & Reportagen) in the category “Current Themes”.
