Over 200 photographs will go under the hammer at the ninth WestLicht Photography Auction. The selection includes numerous icons from the history of photography, precious examples from the early days of the medium as well as Austrian classics.

A positively sensational document from the beginnings of photography is a Daguerreotype by Louis Daguerre (1787-1851) himself, a Portrait of Dorothée Léocardie Cotte of 1844.
A special focus of this autumn’s auction is on classic reportage photography from the 1940s to 60s in the vein of Magnum or Life Magazine, with vintage prints by Werner Bischof, Henri Cartier-Bresson, René Burri, Cornell Capa, Robert Frank, Marc Riboud and George Rodger.

Alfred Eisenstaedt, one of the most productive photographers of the twentieth century, is represented by 12 photographs in total; among them his famous picture DrumMajor, University of Michigan. The auction features further icons of twentieth century photography, like Bill Brandt’s London (Nude with Bent Elbow), 1952, Harold E. Edgerton’s Milk Drop Coronet, ca. 1957, André Kertész’s Satiric Dancer, 1926, or René Burri’s Che Guevara, 1963.

With works by Moriz Nähr – among them photographs of now lost paintings by Gustav Klimt – Heinrich Kühn, Rudolf Koppitz, Erich Lessing, Inge Morath and Franz Hubmann, Austrian photography also plays a major part in WestLicht’s ninth Photography Auction.
