About 200 photographs will go under the hammer on 21 November at the eleventh WestLicht Photography Auction. The selection includes numerous icons from the history of photography.
»If I hadn’t photographed some things, nobody would have seen them«. And indeed, Diane Arbus managed to capture life on film in a previously unseen manner. Only few photographers have left a similar imprint on 20th century photography. Among the most famous pictures by Arbus, born New York 1923, is Identical Twins (Cathleen and Colleen) from 1967. The Twins and three other Arbus-prints are some of the auction’s highlights.
An equally iconic image is Rudolf Koppitz’s Bewegungsstudie from 1925. The photograph combines modern dance and art nouveau elements in a perfect composition. In an impressively graphical manner, Magnum co-founder Henri Cartier-Bresson photographed Indian women in the town of Ahmedabad in 1966. His agency-mate Marc Riboud captured children watching a puppet theatre in 1957 Beijing. With an infrared-camera, Weegee, legendary US-photographer with Austrian roots, spied on a couple in a New York movie theatre in 1945. In the early 60s, Mario Giacomelli took a silhouette-like picture of a group of dancing clerics.
Franz Hubmann, one of Austrian photography’s finest, who would have celebrated his 100th anniversary this year, is represented in the selection with one of his famous portraits of Pablo Picasso. Hubmann’s Leica M3 will fall under the hammer in the WestLicht Camera-Auction on 22 November.
