18TH WESTLICHT PHOTO AUCTION
23.11.2018, 5 PM
For collectors the Photo Auction Preview offers the chance to fall in love with particular lots and examine them closely and for every photo enthusiast, the Preview is a unique opportunity to experience an array of rare historical and contemporary works.
With Robert Capa’s »The Falling Soldier« one of the most famous photo icons of the twentieth century comes under the hammer at the Auction on 23 November.
Capa took the picture in 1936 during the Spanish Civil War. It depicts a republican militiaman in the very moment when he is fatally hit by a bullet. The image is »almost universally acknowledged as one of the greatest war photographs ever made and as a symbol for the fight against fascism«, as Capa authority Richard Whelan observes.
Although the photo has been published in books and magazines millions of times, early prints from the time the picture was taken, so-called vintage prints, are extremely rare.
For an estimated 10,000 to 12,000 Euros Henri Cartier-Bresson’s masterpiece from 1932, showing a man jumping across a puddle »Behind the Gare Saint-Lazare«, is on offer.
Elliott Erwitt’s popular dog with a wool hat, taken in New York City 1974, is expected to fetch 6,000 to 7,000 Euros.
Among the further highlights of the more than 200 auction lots are Marc Riboud’s »Le Peintre de la tour Eiffel«, Thomas Hoepker’s legendary portrait of Muhammad Ali and Moriz Nähr’s photo of Gustav Klimt at the Internationale Kunstschau in 1909 Vienna.
Also on offer is Nan Goldin’s self-portrait from »The Ballad of Sexual Dependancy« – which at the same time provides an outlook on the upcoming WestLicht exhibition starting in December with works by Goldin, Lisette Model and Diane Arbus.
The portfolio of the Auction does not only address experienced collectors. With starting prices from 600 Euro among the photographs and 300 Euro among the photobooks, novice collectors and photo enthusiasts with a more moderate budget will have the chance to make a catch as well.
