Staging in press photography

Images transport emotions - and that is precisely why they are used for propaganda purposes in conflicts. But where does staging begin: with the re-enactment of an event for the camera? In the digital editing? Or already in the selection of the motif? And in times of amateur photography, how can staged pictures be distinguished from real documents from inaccessible crisis regions?
That the topic moves people was impressively proven by the number of visitors who had come to WestLicht to follow the discussion: More than 200 guests crowded into the auditorium between the photographs of the World Press Photo exhibition - the audience participated lively in the discussion at the end of the evening with numerous contributions.
The panelists were:
Jürgen Grimm, Professor of Communication Studies, University of Vienna
Michael Leckel, photographer, former head of the picture department of Reuters Germany
Petra Ramsauer, crisis reporter (NZZ, Zeit, News, Haaretz)
Robert Treichler, Head of Foreign Affairs, Profil
Moderation:
Julia Herrnböck, DER STANDARD
