NÖRDLICH VON LIBYEN
A FILM BY LUISE MÜLLER
18.10.2023, 7 PM
The refugee movement across the Mediterranean route has been one of the defining themes of the World Press Photo exhibition for several years: In the hope of a better life and to escape the exploitation, abuse and hunger in Libya, thousands of people take the perilous route across the Mediterranean every year. Thanks to NGOs and private sea rescue initiatives, many of the refugees are brought to safe European ports.
Who are the helpers who often put their entire existence on the line during their missions? Vienna-based filmmaker Luise Müller has portrayed two of them. Her documentary follows Antje and Dariush, two activists living in Hamburg. Antje has worked as a paramedic on sea rescue operations, her partner Dariush as a captain. In Italy he has been charged with "aiding and abetting illegal immigration". He faces twenty years in prison.
Nördlich von Libyen is a film that not only gives personal insights into the work of two sea rescuers, but also paints a picture of a civil society scene that organises itself against the policies of the border regimes.
Filmmaker Luise Müller (*1989, Frankfurt am Main) lives in Vienna and initially studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts. In 2015 she switched to the Department of Art and Film with Thomas Heise, from 2022 under the professorship of Tizza Covi. Nördlich von Libyen was completed in January 2023 and screened at the Documentary Film Week and the Zündstoff Festival in Hamburg, among other places.
